Local Boxer Puts 9 Years of Retirement Behind Him to Help Local Cause
Brum’s very own former World Middleweight Boxing Champion; Wayne Elcock put 9 years of retirement behind him for local cause Libby Mae’s Little Angels.
Wayne first met Charlotte & Rich Sharratt, Libby Mae’s parents a couple of years ago and agreed to help their amazing cause by putting on an amateur boxing show through his Boxing Club Wayne Elcock’s Academy based in Chelmsley Wood. Charlotte tells us ‘Following a few meetings we invited Wayne along to a meeting at Birmingham City F.C which we had chosen as a venue to host the event, in the meeting we were throwing ideas around about how we could raise the most money and suddenly Wayne said he would come out of retirement for us, for One Night Only’. Wayne a big Blue Nose loved the thought of fighting at his beloved St Andrews and also saw this as an opportunity to finally end his career on a high whilst raising money to help save babies lives across our region. Wayne bought in fellow World Champion Boxer Tony Oakey from Portsmouth for the Exhibition fight.
One Night Only was a huge success, the rooms at St Andrews was full, there were 5 amateur bouts, a raffle, auction and the headline fight Wayne ‘Mad Dog’ Elcock v Tony ‘Hokey Cokey’ Oakey. The Exhibition fight was of a very high standard, both boxers giving it their all and had it been scored would have been a very close call. When asked the question ‘Who Won?’ by supporters Waynes answer was THE CHARITY. Charlotte told us all of the guests were overjoyed at the show that was put on for them and they have received lots of messages of thanks. The total raised was £6067.00 which will make a huge difference to the cause.
Libby Mae’s Little Angels is a local charity that was formed by Charlotte & Rich Sharratt following the devastating loss of their 2 week old Daughter Libby Mae in 2013, the couple fundraise to support all 18 Neonatal Units throughout The Midlands Region and to date have raised in excess of £300,000.00. Their next event is their Annual Ball which will be held on 13th October 2013 at The Macdonald Burlington Hotel in Birmingham, for more information on the event or the charity please visit their website www.libbymaeslittleangels.com
